Transfer Students

Academic advising at UCSD is shared by two sets of advisors: College and Major.

College Advisor

  • Generalist.
  • College advisors assist with the overall planning of the entire UCSD academic experience.
  • There are six different colleges.

Major Advisor

  • Specialist.
  • HDP advisors assist with questions related specifically to the human development major.
    • They can answer questions regarding: HDP major and pre-major requirements, transfer courses, double majors, prerequisites, course enrollment for HDP courses, course planning, honors programs, independent research, internships, and career advising specific to Human Development.
  • There are two undergraduate advisors for the Human Development Program:
    • Alia Welch Partida: alia@ucsd.edu
    • Mariko Cavey : mcavey@ucsd.edu
    • To schedule an appointment please call (858) 534-9919 during office hours.

    HDP Major Information

    • All community college courses are considered lower-division coursework.
      • Transfer students should complete as much HDP pre-major coursework as possible prior to transfer to UCSD.
    • Seven of the eight screening courses for admittance to the Human Development major can be taken at a community college.
      • HDP 1 must be taken in residence at UCSD and is only offered during the fall quarter. See UCSD’s Cross Enrollment Program for an opportunity to complete HDP 1 prior to transfer.
      • All courses must be taken for a letter grade; pass grades are not accepted.
      • All lower-division coursework must be completed with a grade of C- or better.
      • The GPA of the eight lower division courses must equal or exceed 2.75 (roughly a B- average).

    Preparing for transfer to UCSD

    • The Human Development Program encourages all potential HDP transfer students to schedule an advising appointment with an HDP advisor prior to transferring to UCSD.
      • HDP advisors can assist with course planning and questions that the Community College Advisor may not be able to answer.
    • With enough planning and preparatory coursework, transfers can be ready to declare the Human Development Major in their first quarter of enrollment at UCSD, particularly if they take advantage of programs such as the UCSD’s Cross Enrollment Program.
      • Consult Assist, the official source for articulation and student transfer information for course articulation information.
      • Compare course articulation information available on Assist with HDP pre-major requirements in order to effectively map transferrable courses that fulfill as manypre-major requirements as possible.
      • Consulting Assist will allow transfer students to see which lower division courses will automatically credit towards the HDP pre-major.

    UCSD Cross Enrollment Program

    • This program allows community college students to enroll, on a limited basis, in UCSD courses prior to transfer – such as HDP 1.
    • Application for Cross Enrollment (pdf)
    • The Human Development Program strongly encourages transfer students to take advantage of this program.
      • HDP 1 – Introduction to Human Development must be taken in-residence at UCSD. This course is only offered during the fall quarter.

    First quarter at UCSD

    • HDP strongly encourages transfer students to schedule an academic advising appointment prior to their first quarter enrollment. This appointment is necessary in order for transfer students to verify which requirements have been met and to have any necessary pre-requisites cleared for enrollment in upper-division courses.
    • Transfer students are strongly encouraged to enroll in HDP 1 – Introduction to Human Development which is only offered during the fall.
      • Please contact the HDP office if there is no space available.
    • Transfer students should review their transfer record posted to their academic history onTritonLink.
      • Confirm that all transfer courses are listed.
      • Confirm that all UCSD equivalent courses are listed.
      • If a course does not appear on their TritonLink record, students should contact the UCSD Admissions Office for correction.

    Course Enrollment

    • The Human Development Program strongly encourages transfer students to schedule an academic advising appointment prior to their first quarter enrollment.
      • This is necessary in order for transfer students to verify which requirements have been met, petition courses for credit and to have any necessary pre-requisites cleared for enrollment in upper-division courses
    • However, in the event that a student’s enrollment appointment occurs before they are able to come in for advising, the following information will assist them in proper selection of courses for their first quarter:
      1. Review the Human Development major and pre-major requirements.
      2. Compare course articulation information available on Assist, the official source for articulation and student transfer information, with HDP pre-major requirements. Students will see which lower division courses will automatically credit towards the HDP pre-major.
        • Please be aware that just because a course is UC transferable does notguarantee that it will fulfill an HDP major requirement.
        • The course must be articulated via assist for the HDP major or approved by HDP on an individual basis via a course petition.
          • For courses that do not appear on Assist but appear to be equivalent to an HDP pre-major requirement, students must file an undergraduate student petition with HDP in order for the course to be considered for HDP credit.
        • Please note that only courses taken for a letter grade can count for the pre-major requirements. The grade in each course must be a "C" or higher and the combined GPA for the 8 pre-major course must meet or exceed a 2.75 (approximately a B- average).
        • Students should review their transfer record posted to their academic history onTritonLink. Are all transfer courses listed? Are the UCSD equivalent courses listed? If a course does not appear on their TritonLink record, students should contact the UCSD Admissions Office for correction.
      3. Once students have determined which UCSD major courses they have completed (and what courses they still need to take in order to complete the pre-major, such as HDP 1), students should review the tentative HDP course offerings for next year at insert link to get an idea of which courses are offered.
      4. Refer to the current quarter’s schedule of classes on Tritonlink to see which courses still have space.
      5. Enroll in HDP 1 – Introduction to Human Development which is only offered during the fall! If there is no space available, please contact the Human Development Program.

    Searching the Schedule of Classes

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of HDP, most of our courses are offered by other departments. This can make searching the UCSD schedule of classes for HDP courses somewhat difficult, as it requires almost 20 separate searches to check on our entire curriculum when searching by subject or department.

To make your search is easier and more efficient, HDP majors should learn to look for their classes by "CODE.”  If you look at the first search page of the schedule, "By Code(s)" is the third tab under "find courses." Select this tab.

    Search for classes by code(s)

In this section, you can then just type in the exact courses you are interested in searching for (Math 10A, PSYC 168, LTWL 114). You can also “paste” in a list of courses that you are interested in. Once you click the search button, you will receive a list of all courses available from the ones that you entered into the search query, and their schedule information.

    Search results

HDP majors are encouraged to use this search feature, as they can easily paste in all relevant courses for a particular requirement that they need to fulfill.  A simple list of all HDP courses for you to use can be found here.  Just cut and paste these courses into the search field on the schedule of classes.

HDP 1 – Introduction to Human Development

    • HDP 1 is ONLY offered in the fall.
    • HDP 1 must be taken in-residence at UCSD.
    • Transfer students should enroll in HDP 1 as early in their academic career as possible at UCSD.
      • If space in the course is not available, please contact the HDP office!
    • Transfer students can take advantage of the UCSD Cross-Enrollment Program in order to complete this requirement prior to transfer.

If you have additional questions, please contact HDP at (858) 534-9919 or hdp@ucsd.edu.
